PURPOSE AND VALUELaw Enforcement
The main purpose and agenda of the BCSCPD is to provide and maintain a safe, secure, drug-free atmosphere for all students, staff, and facilities within the Brownsburg Schools. This is accomplished by placing officers directly in the school setting, where they can establish working relationships with staff, build bonds with students, and be familiar with everyday operations and facilities. Law Related Education The duties of School Resource Officers often include teaching or co-teaching in the classroom about the law, legal processes, and principles fundamental to our democracy. Officers in the classroom help stimulate the development of critical thinking and decision-making skills related to legal rights and responsibilities. Students learn to understand the concept of justice as well as the complex role of law enforcement in the community. Law Related Counseling The term "School Resource Officer" is a widely encompassing title that is awarded to specially trained police officers who devote themselves to serving in a school setting. Aside from providing law enforcement services to the schools and educating students on various issues, SROs find themselves being used in a multitude of capacities. One of these comes in the form of informal counselor, as the officers make themselves available to students as a role model and a stable adult figure with whom the students can develop bonds and confide in. |
